Films at the Gate
In September, for five nights a vacant lot in Chinatown is cleared to provide a free outdoor theater. Shown those five days are Kung-Fu and classic Chinese-language films. Films at the Gate is a group effort, combining the efforts of several Chinatown residents and the Asian Community Development Corporation/ A-VOYCE too! A-VOYCE plays an important role in this event mainly because many A-VOYCE youth work on this project throughout the summer in order to bring it to working condition!
Films of the gate strives to:
- improve awareness of Boston’s Chinatown as a site of cultural activity
- restore a tradition of shared, public experience of Chinese-language films in Chinatown
- provide temporary community use of Chinatown’s underutilized spaces, draw foot-traffic to neighborhood restaurants, and make downtown Boston a destination beyond the working hours.

Breaking the Barriers
Breaking the Barriers is an annual open-mic event that is hosted by A-VOYCE on National Youth Service Day, which is April 25th. Our goal is to bring everyone from the different neighborhoods of the Greater Boston area through artistic expression. We provide workshops for youth from different organizations during the beginning of the day of the event. These workshops provide a deeper insight into a piece that you might want to perform during the evening of the open-mic event.
Breaking Barriers 2009 was a great success! Headed by MeiHua and Celinna. Anthony, one of our youngest youth in the program emceed the event! Prepare for next year!
