Allen Zou
School: Boston Latin School
Grade: 10
Age: 15

“I’m not sure about what career I plan to pursue in the future, but I work hard in school and aspire to get into a good college. In my spare time, I enjoy wrestling and lifting weights. I like traveling and visiting my family in China and I really like trying new foods from different cultures.”

Gerald Paradela

“My interests include sports, sleep, and food. I am Filipino and proud. I was born and raised in Boston and spent most of my time on the basketball courts in my neighborhood.”

Zoe Huang
School: Boston Latin School
Grade: 10
Age: 15

“I am a first generation ABC (American born Chinese). I live in Allston with my parents and younger brother. During my free time, I like to play volleyball, spend time with my friends, and listen to music. After the summer is over, I hope to have learned more about myself and more about my ethnic and cultural background. My goal in life is to settle down in a nice town and live happily with my family. And above all, I love being Asian.”

Eric Li
School: Boston Latin School
Grade: 11
Age: 15

“This summer, I want to meet new people and improve my skills and assets. I also want to learn more about my cultural background and the social issues that affect Asian Americans. I enjoy spending my free time on the court playing basketball and working out. I like to volunteer a lot because it makes me happy when I can put smiles on other people’s faces. Hopefully I can take my basketball talents somewhere in the future, but otherwise I aspire to pursue a career in business or pharmacy.”

Oanh Nguyen
School: Boston Latin School
Grade: 11
Age: 16

“I joined A-VOYCE because even though I’m always in Chinatown, I never really took the time to fully appreciate the cultural and historic aspects of the neighborhood. This summer, I hope to make a difference within the Chinatown community and to meet new people. In my family, I am the youngest of four children and yes, my parents are much more lenient on me than they are on my brothers and sisters (but they’re not that strict anyway). My whole family was born in Vietnam except for me. They all came to America in 1995, the year that I was born. Growing up, I never wanted to be a princess. I knew that I wanted to be a veterinarian because I love animals. Unfortunately, I am allergic to every animal that has fur (except, strangely enough, dogs).  Now, I have no idea what I want to be. In school, I am a members’ liaison for the Asian cultural group at my school (known as Asian Students In Action, or A.S.I.A.) and I am an activities coordinator for the Boston Latin School Vietnamese Cultural Society. As for hobbies, I love to eat, travel, and watch Korean dramas.”

Yao Tan

Ying Loo
School: North Quincy High School
Grade: 12
Age: 16

“This summer I want to learn more about the issues that affect Asian Americans and to help better my community. I hope to gain more insight on what challenges Asian Americans face, and how to overcome them. I came to America when I was in the 4th grade. I currently live in Quincy. I am a very active person; I enjoy running, playing tennis, and playing basketball. I like to socialize with people and am not afraid to speak out. I hope to get into a good college next year.”

Carlton Mei
School: Josiah Quincy Upper School
Grade: 12
Age: 17

“This summer, I hope to learn more about Chinatown and to share my knowledge to those around me. As for hobbies, I want to start dancing hip-hop. I haven’t danced in a while, but I hope I get into a dance class. I’m spending my spare time this summer at the YMCA to get into shape. I’m lifting weights every other day to prepare for wrestling season. I’m also working on my own clothing line! I hope to sell a lot of my products this summer so that my clothing line gets a lot of publicity. I am a designer and I love seeing people wear my work. My academic goals include raising my GPA, scoring a 2000 on the SATs, and get into Eckerd College. The college is very eco-friendly, and it would be nice to go to Florida and leave Boston for a bit.”

Maxwell Lok
School: Boston Latin School
Grade: 12

“I got involved with A-VOYCE because I want to improve my leadership skills. Some of my hobbies include playing videogames and collecting coins. I’m not really committed to collecting coins though. I have lived in both Quincy and Boston, and I am a first generation ABC (American born Chinese).”

Melissa Trinh
School: Milton High School
Grade: 12

“My family immigrated to America from Vietnam. I currently live in Milton and I have lived there my entire life. I enjoy playing tennis, rock climbing, and hiking. My life goal is to help better the lives of others. I hope to achieve this goal through working in the medical field and traveling to other countries to volunteer there.

Joey Banh
